We are what we do

It is in human nature to do things which suit our personalities. Activities we take part in are personal decisions, that give us an enormous amount of joy and put us in a relaxed mood. When we do things we enjoy doing, we give it our all and do it whole heartedly, and we become one with the activity.

The nature of the activity affects our external actions as well as our internal emotions.
If the activity is positive such as a sport, it would teach us many valuable lessons like discipline and life skills. It also develops our health and improves our relationships with the sport. We become passionate and driven to become successful sports people.

When participating in activities, our personalities are exposed by means of speech and the manner in which we conduct ourselves. Activities have a great influence upon our emotions and either the best comes out in us or the worst. If we ate fatty foods at a large scale, we would eventually form a relationship and a bond with the food leading us to become fat.

People partake in activities to become ambassadors in this field. Medical students study medicine with the intention to become doctors. The activities we derive pleasure from needs to take place constantly over a period of time. The activity would then influence a person, thus causing the individual to earn the title of the activity.

When people ride their bicycles on a daily basis, dressed and geared up, they earn the title of a cyclist. I am able to ride a bicycle; however this does not happen frequently, carry a pattern or specific characteristic, which would enable me to earn the title of a cyclist.

In many other areas, we are able to perform an activity once, and suddenly we become hooked to the activity. I could save somebody’s life today and become a hero; however I do not rescue people everyday. Unfortunately many suffer negative connotations linked to activities done once. The record remains and the title does not change.

Thus we are what we do, so think very carefully about the title linked to the activity next time you partake in an action again.
Think carefully next time you kill that mosquito bugging you all through the night!

Stand up against women abuse

The abuse of women is prevalent in our society. Daily we read in the media, of women being fatally shot by jealous husbands, or boyfriends. Daily we read of women being beaten or ill-treated. Women are raped on a daily basis. Some men have lost their respect for women. They should be removed from society.

Women are the back–bone of society. They have slaved in the Apartheid era. They have slaved to make our land with its Rainbow Nation, a democratic country.

Women are being abused financially, physically, verbally, and emotionally. Some women endure this treatment because they have children, and have no other place to stay.
All women need to wake up and realize that they need not allow their husbands to abuse them. Women need to unite against this. A start could be by getting an interdict against them, and if they continue, put them behind bars. Surely, that is where they belong.

They have put fear into women and children. Don’t let abuse continue. Do something now!

Student Expenses

I find it extremely intriguing that students have to pay high fees.
I do not blame any institution as we as students do understand that we are paying for recourses to improve learning environments. It is difficult to grasp the term students.

Students are people focussing on studying and developing their future, to one day earn a stable income to provide for their lives. At this point students find themselves having a minimal income and needing to use their only funds on exorbitant prices of text books and various other costs such as travelling, stationary and food. Besides studying and keeping up with academic standards, students have to keep up with inflationary forces incurred on them. When the annual interest rate goes up, workers also receive a percentage to improve their living standards. Student’s living standards remain the same, while cost increases do not alleviate their difficulties. Many institutions host events, expecting students to place their input financially. These institutions do not realise that students do not work for them as internal stakeholders.

Many external organisations have student discounts and student parties to satisfy the needs of student life. That is admirable for me, as on our very own campuses we are expected to pay high prices for food products as if we are the management of internal stakeholders of a highly successful business. It is a chain that students need to break, to develop better conditions for the future. There are always solutions to problems. We need to figure out means of combating the greed of the profiteers.

It is of the utmost importance that the financial situation in our country, as well as the plight of the struggling masses, and here I include students, be considered.

We are afraid of the wrong things

It is said that we are born into this world without fear. Fear is developed, and taught to us as we grow up. We are taught to fear by means of discipline, culture and religion.
Fear has become a part of our lives and a way of life, creating instability.

We do not think of experimenting or exploring as we fear the consequences. We constantly fear the unknown and we as humans cannot predict what lies ahead. It is a factor mentioned by Maslow’s Hierarchy needs to feel accepted and loved. In this respect our fears block us from achieving our full potential and reaching the highest point of our goals. Our minds and feelings hold us back due to constantly worrying about what the outcome will be. Instead of living fearless lives, we create a shell around us, and become paranoid of extraordinary or insignificant factors faced in our lives. Our decisions will either empower us one hundred percent or not at all, however not all things that we are afraid to do will affect us negatively.
Many of these are mere perceptions of situations, which hinder us from becoming people with strong wills and personalities.

Fear deters us from living life to the fullest. We should be bold in making a difference in our lives and accepting the consequences. If you do not have faith in yourself fear will conquer you. We should also keep in mind that our Creator will never take us to, what he is unable to carry us through.

Fish fell out of the sky

While walking along the beach at Blouberg Strand, admiring the girls in their bikinis and watching the children enjoying themselves with their buckets and spades building sand castles, I suddenly felt a thud on my head. I was knocked onto the sand. I laid there, too scared to turn or twist, “what was that” I thought.

I eventually turned my head. What could have hit me? Did someone throw something at me? Why would they do such a thing?

I slowly turned my head to the right. There was no sign of any thing that could have been thrown at me. I turned my head to the left. To my surprise I saw a slimy wet fish. I jumped up angered with the thought of someone throwing me with a fish.

I looked around and herd people laughing. A bird had picked the fish up but on its way to the nest the fish had fallen from its mouth onto my head. “What a fishy tale” I muttered and continued walking on the beach.

PUBLIC RELATIONS (THE POEM OF INDUSTRY)

Public Relations is feeding masses information,
With the intent to create persuasion, and sustain long term relations
To improve organisations image, and develop a positive
Perception, without public doubt
Or question through our publicity campaign
In the city our communication name should stain

In the minds of those who find interest
It is in our character to give people the best
Answer for less,
Than marketing needs,
Public Relations plants greater valuable seeds
And construct these clients to feel in
what we print and they read

The press implants and presses views on stakeholders
To impress the crest within industry
Public Relations expects no less but zest
To transform the norm into a campaign form
Through a communication storm

We perform the best under stress
And we will not stop until our industry
Becomes a great success
An unstoppable communication nest.
