All my life I have been an animal lover, having many cats, some ginger, some black and others unknown (tortoise shell). In all my life I have always been fascinated with the notion of cats loving fish.
I noticed that in many cat food ranges, the main flavours would predominantly be fish.
This would be seen as the original flavour of the cat food range. In many cartoons and movies fish is always portrayed as a cat’s favourite food. The viewer always saw fish bones close to where the alley cats were.
To my understanding, cats have never hunted for fish. House cats never knew the taste of
fish to have acknowledged that it is their favourite food. They go crazy for fish when it is around, if compared to a range of other meals, for example uncooked chicken. They know exactly when it is fish, due to the smell. This smell clearly drives them crazy.
Why would uncooked chicken not have the same effect that fish have on cats? It could be the smell of the fish due to their habitat which cats enjoy. Chicken does not have the strong salty death smell which fish have.
Cats love the smell of fish but hate water. They are born with the love for fish. It would be interesting to see through evolution whether cats would develop flippers, to adapt to water for what they enjoy most.

I love cats. We have a cute tortoise shell cat and omw! When she needs a bath you would think the world is coming to an end the way she shouts and jumps and scratches. She goes completely crazy. Yet, like you said, she loves fish.
ReplyDeleteNot too long ago, I read something that could help explain why cats don't like water. Most types of cats have coats which trap water, so getting wet ruins the ability to keep themselve in cool weather. Cats also do not like being splashed with water around the face, because the water can hurt their sensitive ears.
lol! So for these cats, I doubt they would grow flippers. They will probably always be treated like kings or queens and expect the fish to be served to them.
I'm not really a fan of cats, more a dog-lover. Maybe you should blog about something on dogs- why are dogs man's best friends and not cats? Just a suggestion, use it, don't use it.
ReplyDeleteCats sure are unique creatures and their love for fish is simply developed through instinct. To me though I am a total dog lover and do not take interest in cats as they make me feel uneasy.
ReplyDeleteAs for them growing flippers, I think they love it more to be cats and slowly move around.
